Among the forty presenters, not including three breakfast keynoters and a panel including two NASA scientists, at the Eastern Coatings Show will be Stuart Lipskin of BYK USA, Inc. and Carl Cavalin of Hexion, Inc.  The Show is at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City; the dates are June 1st to June 4th, 2015.

The title of Mr. Lipskin’s paper is “The Pursuit for the Perfect Coatings Finish.”  In that pursuit, he will analyze the coatings defects to be overcome, understanding the reasons for those problems, testing or measuring the quality of a coating, and reducing or eliminating the defects through a basic understanding of the concepts of additive functionality.

A Temple University graduate with a B.A. in Science and an M.B.A., his career began at the Rohm and Haas laboratories followed by stints with Air Products and McWhorter in marketing and sales positions.  In 1981 he joined BYK USA, Inc., as a Technical Sales Representative, moved up to Regional Sales Manager and then to the position he now holds, Key Account Manager working with raw material suppliers to develop partnerships for growth.  He also provides technical support to the BYK USA distributors.

Carl Cavalin’s paper is entitled “Creative Routes to High Solids, Low Viscosity Acrylic and Polyester Polyols for High Performance 2K Urethane Topcoats.”  He will set forth the drives behind the global desire to reduce high VOC emissions in high performance coatings and the fact that high solids binder systems can achieve the goal but with the penalty of higher viscosity.   He will attack this problem with various simple, yet creative, ways to produce low viscosity, high solids acrylic and polyester polyols based on glycidyl neodecanoate and a new glycidyl neononanoate, which supports faster drying and improved final hardness properties.

Carl Cavalin is a Polymer Chemist with the Versatics business unit of Hexion, Inc., in Stafford, Texas.  With over twenty years in the paint and coatings industry, he is also the primary or the co-inventor of nine granted United States patents with six additional patents pending.  Prior to joining Hexion, he was with the Valspar Corporation, where he developed coatings and polymers for a wide variety of applications.
